Alister Hunston, CPA, CA
Alister began practicing in 2010, qualified as a CA in 2013, and completed CPA Canada’s In-Depth Tax Course in 2017.
Alister advises and assists a diverse group of private-sector clients; from one-man operations to large corporate groups. His areas of practice include corporate compliance, tax planning, financial accounting, audit and assurance, business review and analysis, filings, and other advisory services carried out to minimize risk and enhance operations.
He takes great pride in providing reliable professional judgement, and combines exceptional organizational skills with a passion for adding value, solving difficult problems, and building relationships.
Alister believes a community is only as strong as it’s members, and focuses his volunteering efforts through the Rotary Club of Sydney, where he serves as Club Treasurer.
Kiki Kachafanas, CPA, CA, ICD.D, TEP
Upon graduating from Acadia University, Kiki accepted employment with Deloitte & Touche in Sydney, Nova Scotia receiving her CA designation, followed by her TEP designation. Together with a partner, she purchased the assets and accounts of the Deloitte & Touche office in Sydney, where she continues to practice in the areas of assurance and taxation.
Kiki’s Board experience includes: Sydney Tar Ponds Clean-Up Inc., Nova Scotia Securities Commission, Woman’s World Finance, Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, Cape Breton Family YMCA, and Junior Achievement of Cape Breton.
George Unsworth, FCPA, FCA
George Unsworth is a chartered professional accountant, honorary Doctor at Laws from the University College of Cape Breton (UCCB), and an associate partner at hk CPA. George began his career at working at a big 4 firm that we know now as “Deloitte”. He quickly made partner, and later became the firm’s managing partner. In 1998 George and Kiki purchased clients from Deloitte and formed their own practice. George’s accomplishments would take several pages to list. The team at hk CPA regularly benefits from his sound judgement and seemingly limitless knowledge.
In addition to his work at hk CPA, George serves as Vice Chair of the Nova Scotia Health Authority. He has extensive and significant board experience, including board of governors of UCCB, board of governors of the IWK and the IWK’s Charitable Foundation Board, board of directors of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, chair of the United Way Campaign, and board of directors of Nova Scotia Community College. George was awarded The Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013.
Bernard Curry, CPA, MBA
Bernie joined hk CPA in 2018, upon its inception, after qualifying as a CPA with another local firm in Sydney in 2017. He has developed his practice with a focus on providing superior client service while maintaining a high level of precision and expertise. He has advised and assisted clients with a variety of accounting and taxation issues such as new business incorporation and set up, asset rollovers upon incorporation, corporate re-organizations, the winding down of a corporation and other tax planning strategies throughout the life cycle of a business.
Bernie completed CPA Canada’s In-Depth Tax Program in 2020. Taxation of owner-managed organizations is a particular area of expertise and knowledge.
Born and raised in Howie Center, Bernie has his sights set on building a practice of corporate clients that want to grow the community and become leaders in the Cape Breton business landscape. Bernie also sits on the Board of the CBU Alumni Association and serves as Treasurer.
Shauna brings to the table 26 years experience in the accounting industry. Her focus has always been servicing individuals and businesses with tax and accounting needs. Her knowledge and skills in the not-for profit sector complements her tax and accounting background.
Shauna focuses on building business relationships by making herself available to clients and taking great care at resolving individual, corporate, partnership, non-profit, and trust tax issues.
Brett Simmons, CPA
hk CPA is proud to introduce Brett Simmons, CPA. Brett began practicing in 2014 and qualified as a CPA in 2017 at another local firm. Brett has learned a great deal over his five years of experience, mainly in the assurance field, and looks forward to providing excellent service to the firm and its clients in other areas as well.
Born and raised in Glace Bay, Brett played competitive hockey for the majority of his life, including his University years, where he played for the Glace Bay Junior Miners (Kameron Junior Miners). Brett attended Cape Breton University, where he graduated in 2014. Brett believes strongly in giving back to the community and serves as Treasurer to a number of non-profit organizations such as Sydney Downtown Development Association and the Kameron Junior Miners. Brett also believes in giving back to the profession and serves as an Exam Centre Supervisor and Proctor for CPA Atlantic.
In his spare time, Brett is very active, and enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife, daughter, and his German Shepherd
Matt MacDonald, CPA, CA
Matt qualified as a CA and then held the position of senior field auditor for Coopers & Lybrand for over ten years before joining Unsworth Kachafanas in 1998, where he served as an assurance manager until joining hk CPA in 2018. Matt has extensive experience in dealing with owner-managed businesses and not-for-profits. Matt take great pride in his work, and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the hk CPA team.
Allana joined HK CPA in November of 2018 after working for another local accounting firm for the past two years. She became a CPA student in May 2018 and will continue her studies upon joining this firm. Allana has learned and incredible amount from her peers and employers about accounting and is looking forward to advancing her knowledge as a student and as an employee.
Allana was born and raised in Mount Uniacke, Nova Scotia but has called Cape Breton her home for the past five years. She graduated from Cape Breton University with a Major in Accounting in 2017 and during her time there she played on the women’s AUS volleyball team. While not at the office, Allana spends most of her time in a gym, coaching or refereeing volleyball. Allana also sits on the board of the Ally Centre and is transitioning to becoming their treasurer.
Anne Marie MacIsaac
Anne Marie brings years of experience in bookkeeping, payroll and financial
statement preparation to hk CPA, having worked for 25 years in the private sector before joining Unsworth Kachafanas in 2001.
She resides in Upper Leitches Creek with her husband Mike. They have a son, daughter and a granddaughter. She enjoys spending time in Margaree - her birth place. She also enjoys gardening, baking and reading.
